Physics Center of Mass Spring - Mass System MCQ (Single Correct)

Two blocks of masses m and M are moving with speeds v 1 and v 2 (v 1 > v 2 ) in the same direction on the frictionless surface respectively, M being ahead of m. An ideal spring of force constant k is attached to the backside of M (as shown). The maximum compression of the spring when the block collides is :

A
v 1
B
v 2
C
(v 1 – v 2 )
D
None of above is correct

The correct answer is:
C

P i = mv 1 + mv 2

P f = (m + M) v

P i = P f ⇒ v =

By energy consarvation

mv 1 2 + Mv 2 2 = (M + m) v 2 + kx 2

⇒ mv 1 2 + Mv 2 2 = (M + m)

Solving x = (v 1 –v 2 )
